Specific Item Information: Alaska Railroad is a Class II railroad that was founded in 1914, and was completed in 1923. It currently runs between Seward and Fairbanks along 656 miles of track. The ARR serves numerous communities with both freight and passenger service to this day, and is a major tourist attraction in the summer months. In 2023, the ARR celebrated 100 years of operation.
Prototype History: Pullman was the leading producer of heavyweight coaches during the 1st half of the twentieth century. They were known for the quality and luxury of the passenger cars. The observation car was a common sight on heavyweight consists during 1920s and 1930s.
Sleeping, parlor and lounge cars of riveted carbon steel body-frame construction were built, owned and operated by the Pullman Company. These cars were better known by the name "Heavyweight Cars." Between March 1907 and February 1931 there were 8011 cars built.
The 12-1-1 and 10-1-2 cars had four sections, the rest room, vestibule and all rooms removed from the same end. The rest room was moved into the vestibule and five double bedrooms (A,B,C,D,& E) were constructed at that end. Although compartments and drawing rooms were becoming increasingly popular with travelers in the 1920s, Pullman (and most railroads) still favored open section cars, which carried more passengers and generated more revenue per trip. As a result, the 10-1-2 became one of Pullman's most common heavyweight cars, equipped with 10 open sections, two compartments and a single drawing room. Cars built to Pullman Plan #3585, Lot #4728 in late 1923, this configuration is typical of cars modernized with air conditioning in the 1930s, some of which remained in operation into the 1960s.

Total mileage is about 525 putting it between Bangor & Aroostook and New York Ontario & Western in relative size. Alaska does run its own passenger service over the length of the railroad. Although the Alaska Railroad is disconnected from the rest of the North American rail network, they do interchange with other railroads. A trio of sea-going barges ferry rail cars from the port of Whittier to Prince Rupert, British Columbia, and Seattle, Washington. ARR had collected a fleet of Alco RS-1s (and a few RSD-1’s) with cowls, effectively making them cab units unique to this line. These were later replaced by second generation EMD power. The big power on the line is a fleet of 28 SD70MACs. A dozen of these are equipped with HEP for use in passenger service.
The port of Whittier is hemmed in by the ocean on one side and mountains on the other. A 2.5 mile single track tunnel is the only way out of the port. The line through the tunnel is paved like street trackage so that highway traffic can use the tunnel. It is a single lane so highway traffic going south enters from the top of the hour until quarter after. Northbound traffic enters from the bottom of the hour until 45 after the hour. Trains get priority and proceed as soon as traffic has cleared.

Micro-Trains Line split off from Kadee Quality Products in 1990. Kadee Quality Products originally got involved in N-Scale by producing a scaled-down version of their successful HO Magne-Matic knuckle coupler system. This coupler was superior to the ubiquitous 'Rapido' style coupler due to two primary factors: superior realistic appearance and the ability to automatically uncouple when stopped over a magnet embedded in a section of track. The success of these couplers in N-Scale quickly translated to the production of trucks, wheels and in 1972 a release of ready-to-run box cars.
Micro-Trains Line Co. split off from Kadee in 1990 to form a completely independent company. For this reason, products from this company can appear with labels from both enterprises.
