Company History:
In 1986, Lake County, Oregon purchased the 54 mile route from Lakeview, Oregon to Alturas, California from Southern Pacific. The line had originally been built to 3’ gauge by the Nevada-California-Oregon Railroad but had been part of the SP for six decades. From 1986 to 1997, Lake County contracted with Great Western Railway (of Colorado) to operate the line. In 1997, they took over operation themselves. Traffic included perlite, lumber and wood chips. Plagued with derailments and local politics, in 2005 the county leased the line to Modoc Northern Railroad.
