Railroad/Company: Henschel & Son (German: Henschel und Sohn) was a German company, located in Kassel, best known during the 20th century as a maker of transportation equipment, including locomotives, trucks, buses and trolleybuses, and armoured fighting vehicles and weapons.
In 1964, the company took over Rheinische Stahlwerke and became Rheinstahl Henschel AG. Rheinstahl AG itself entered the August Thyssen steelworks in 1976, and the locomotive plant in Kassel was now called Thyssen Henschel. The traditional name Henschel on the locomotives was retained. ABB Henschel, based in Mannheim, was founded in 1990 together with ABB. In 1995, ABB and Daimler-Benz agreed to merge their traffic technology divisions worldwide under the name ABB Daimler Benz Transportation ADtranz. On January 1, 1996, the name Henschel finally disappeared as a vehicle manufacturer. Rail vehicle construction continued under the name ADtranz, a wholly owned subsidiary of the then DaimlerChrysler group. The company was subsequently acquired by Bombardier (Canada) around 2002. The Kassel facility still exists and is one of the world's largest manufacturers of locomotives (Henschel Antriebstechnik).
