Road Name History: TRRA was formed to be a neutral terminal railroad in 1889 by the major railroads serving St. Louis. The center pieces of the operation were two bridges over the Mississippi River, Eads Bridge (built in 1874) and Merchants Bridge which came much later. TRRA also operated St. Louis Union Station, the largest union station in the nation. In 1974, the Eads Bridge was closed to rail traffic due to tight clearances but is still used for highway traffic. In 1989, TRRA traded the Eads Bridge to the city for the MacArthur Bridge which, like the Eads, had been built for both highway and rail, but the MacArthur was closed to highway traffic when the Poplar Street Bridge (highway only) was completed.
