Company History: CCRy was established in 1859 and opened a horsecar line on State Street between Randolph and 12th in Chicago, Illinois. In 1882, the line expanded to Wabash-Cottage Grove Avenues and converted from horses to a cable-car operation on the main routes. Both grip cars and trailers were used. In 1890, one of the horsecar lines was electrified. In 1892, trolley wire was strung over the remaining horse routes and the horses were retired. For the next 14 years, the CCRy ran with this mixed system of cable-car mainlines and trolley powered branches. Through service from the trolley routes was provided by having the trolley cars meet a cable car at the intersection. The trolley car was then coupled to the grip car and towed down the cable car line. A single grip car could tow up to three trolley cars. In 1906, trolley wire was strung over the cable-car lines and the grip cars and trailers were either converted to electric operation or retired. In 1914, Chicago Surface Lines took over operations on the CCRy and the latter became a paper railroad until dissolved in 1950.
Successor/Parent History: The CSL was established in 1913 to unify the four existing Chicago streetcar lines. The unification created the largest streetcar system in the world. The fleet included 3,100 streetcars. As early as 1927, buses began taking over some routes. The CSL, which had been operating in receivership for a number of years, was taken over by Chicago Transit Authority in 1947.
