Company History: The Carthage railroad was established in 1888 and built a 10 mile line between Carthage and Cameron, North Carolina. Fits of construction and abandonments followed until a 19 mile route from Parkwood (formerly Hallison) and Camerson remained. In 1906, the company was reorganized as the Randolph & Cumberland Railroad.
Successor/Parent History: In 1906, the Carthage railroad was reorganized as the Randolph & Cumberland Railroad. On August 21, 1924, the NC State Legislature passed an Act authorizing the town of Carthage to purchase the Randolph & Cumberland Railroad. On the same date, the Legislature authorized any purchaser to sell off portions of said railroad.
