Transportation Company - Benwood & Wheeling Connecting - Railroad

Company History: The B&WC was established in 1900 as a subsidiary of National Tube Company to be a neutral switching carrier in the Benwood/Wheeling, West Virginia area. In addition to serving National Tube’s mills, the 7 mile B&WC also served the coke plant of the Semet-Solvay Company. B&WC connected with B&O, Pittsburgh Cincinnati Chicago & St. Louis (later part of PRR), Wheeling Terminal Railway, PRR and Wheeling & Lake Erie. The B&WC ran with between seven and nine switchers. The mill and railroad later became part of U.S. Steel. Sometime in the 1930s, USS came to an agreement with Benwood’s line haul railroads and the B&WC was transitioned from common carrier to intra-plant switching line under the USS flag.
Successor/Parent History:
United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X), more commonly known as U.S. Steel, is an American integrated steel producer headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with production operations in the United States, Canada, and Central Europe. As of 2016, the company was the world's 24th largest steel producer and second largest domestic producer, trailing only Nucor Corporation.

Though renamed USX Corporation in 1986, the company returned to its present name in 2001 after spinning off its energy business, including Marathon Oil, and other assets from its core steel concern. The company experienced significant downsizing during the 1980s; a decline in market capitalization resulted in its removal from the S&P 500 Index in 2014.
