Transportation Company - Cincinnati Georgetown & Portsmouth - Railroad

Company History: The CG&P was established in 1881 as the reorganization of the Cincinnati & Portsmouth Railroad which had managed to build a 3’ gauge line from Columbia to Mount Carmel, Ohio before falling into bankruptcy. The CG&P pushed the line to Georgetown by 1886. In 1900, funding was secured to push the line to West Union but instead, CG&P took the money and standard gauged the railroad and began hanging trolley wire. The first interurban car ran in 1902. Also in 1902, they built a branch to an amusement park, but this branch was built to 5’ 2 ½” gauge to be compatible with the connecting Cincinnati Traction Company. So for a time, the company’s Carrol Street Yard was triple gauge: standard, narrow and broad. The last extensions were to Batavia and Russelville. The CG&P was reorganized in 1927 as the Cincinnati-Georgetown Railroad.
