Transportation Company - Palmetto Brick - Heavy Industry

Company History: Palmetto Brick operated a one and a half mile 3’ gauge railroad from their brick plant in Wallace, South Carolina to the company’s clay pits. The line included a signaled grade crossing and a steel bridge. The locomotive fleet consisted of two Plymouth model DLH switchers. The 24 car fleet consisted of four-wheeled dump cars built by Western Wheeled Scraper. Many of these cars received larger wheels from scrapped TTX flatcars. The cars and locomotives were equipped with link and pin couplers. There are reports that the line had been built to standard gauge but when the company sought to replace their steam locomotive, they got a deal on a used 3’ gauge Plymouth. So they added a third rail. Short segments of dual gauge remain on the line but all of the rolling stock was converted to narrow gauge. Operation of the railroad ended sometime after 2011.
