Company History: The NCYR was launched in the autumn of 1985 as a subsidiary of the Laurenburg & Southern to take over the 20 mile former Atlantic Coast Line route between Rocky Mount and Spring Hope, North Carolina from the previous owner Seaboard System. Operations began with a pair of SW1’s. In 1994, Laurenburg & Southern and their subsidiaries, including the NCYR were acquired by the Gulf & Ohio Railways shortline group. In 2006, the five miles of line on the Spring Hope end was sold to the state of North Carolina and in 2011, the G&O group sold the rest of the Nash County Railroad and it was merged into the Carolina Coastal Railway.
Successor/Parent History: CLNA was launched by the Rail Link shortline group in 1989 as a spin off from Norfolk Southern, operating a 17 mile route from Pinetown to Belhaven, North Carolina. Rail Link was acquired by Genesee & Wyoming in 1995. G&W sold the Carolina Coastal to Main Line Rail Management in 2003. In 2007, Carolina Coastal expanded massively when they leased from Norfolk Southern the line from Plymouth south to Pinetown, then west to Greenville, Wilson and finally Raleigh, North Carolina making today’s CLNA 159 miles long.
