Company History: Georgia Eastern was the result of a February, 1987 spin-off from CSX of a 17 mile line between Barnett and Washington, Georgia. This had been the Georgia Railroad’s Washington Branch. The company lasted just 16 months before being sold and becoming the Georgia Woodlands Railroad. Traffic included fertilizer, lumber, plastic, pulpwood and woodchips.
Successor/Parent History:
The GWRC swooped onto the scene in 1988 to take over the route of the Georgia Eastern which was in financial trouble after just 16 months of operation. It ran the 17 mile former Washington Branch of the Georgia Railroad between Washington and Barnett, Georgia. At that time, GWRC was owned by the parent company of the Chicago West Pullman & Southern. Traffic in the early days included fertilizer, lumber, plastics, pulpwood, and woodchips with about 50 cars moving in a typical week. GWRC joined the OmniTRAX family of shortlines in 1992.
Brief History: The U.S. is a country of 50 states covering a vast swath of North America, with Alaska in the northwest and Hawaii extending the nation’s presence into the Pacific Ocean.
