Company History: Cairo (pronounced like “Karo” Syrup) is on the Ohio River at the extreme southern end of Illinois, not far from the confluence with the Mississippi River. The CTML was launched in 1982 to take over operation of two and half miles of abandoned former New York Central route in Cairo. The following year, they bought a 17 mile adjoining line from Davis to Elco from Illinois Central Gulf. In 1996 the line was acquired by the Pioneer shortline group and they established the Shawnee Terminal Railroad to operate it. At some point it appears that the 17 mile ex-ICG extension was sold or abandoned.
Successor/Parent History: Pioneer Railcorp is a railroad holding company that owns short line railroads and several other railroad related businesses including a railroad equipment company and a contract switching services company. Railroad transportation is provided by the Company’s wholly-owned short line railroad subsidiaries ("Pioneer Lines".) Pioneer Lines rail system is primarily devoted to carrying freight and currently consists of 23 rail operations in 13 states with over 600 miles of track serving over 100 customers. .
