Company History: BXN opened in 1907 to link Bauxite, Arkansas to a connection with the St. Louis Iron Mountain & Southern (later Missouri Pacific) just 3 miles away. The line was built by and for Alcoa for loading of alumina plus a little bit of miscellaneous freight. Note the Razorback logo on the end of the RS3. The latter day red, black and white switcher paint scheme was shared by other Alcoa owned shortlines. The BXN was sold to RailAmerica in 2005. Today, Bauxite & Northern is one of the many Genesee & Wyoming shortlines.
Successor/Parent History: RailAmerica, Inc., based in Jacksonville, Florida, was a holding company of a number of short-line railroads and regional railroads in the United States and Canada. In 2007, RailAmerica was acquired by Fortress Investment Group.
On July 23, 2012, Genesee & Wyoming Inc. announced that it intended to purchase RailAmerica. They assumed control on December 28, 2012.
