Company History: The Lerdo to Torreon Tramway Company opened in 1890 as a horsecar line connecting Lerdo to the Mexican Central station in Gomez Palacio in the state of Durango, Mexico. In 1898, Manuel Jose Othon was awarded a franchise to electrify and extend the line over the Rio Nazas to Torreon in the state of Coahuila. Thirteen new electric cars were ordered from J.G. Brill in Philadelphia and electric operations began on March 3, 1901. By 1904 the car fleet was up to 24 and freight service was made available. In 1905 the Lerdo to Torreon Tramway Company merged with the Electricity Company & Torreon Railways to form the Lerdo to Torreon Railway. The streetcar lines in downtown Torreon closed in 1940, leaving the interurban line over the river. It too was abandoned on March 3, 1953 – exactly 52 years since the start of electric operations.
Brief History: Mexico is a country between the U.S. and Central America that's known for its Pacific and Gulf of Mexico beaches and its diverse landscape of mountains, deserts and jungles. Ancient ruins such as Teotihuacán and the Mayan city of Chichén Itzá are scattered throughout the country, as are Spanish colonial-era towns. In capital Mexico City, upscale shops, renowned museums and gourmet restaurants cater to modern life.
