Successor/Parent History:
The PSRy operated interurban, streetcar and elevated railway lines in New Jersey. At its height, they operated approximately 900 miles of routes split between six divisions.

The Bergen Division linked Edgewater with Paterson, Leonia, Tenafly and Coytesville plus a branch from Paterson to Suffern, New York. The Central Division served New Brunswick, South Amboy, Perth Amboy, Westfield, Carteret, Piscatawaytown, Newark, Elizabeth, Trenton, Aldene, Elmora, Raritan and Boundbrook. The Essex Division served Newark, Nutley, Paterson, Bloomfield, Orange, Maplewood, Hillside, North Arlington, Edgewater, South Orange, Irvington and Montclair. The Hudson Division served Newark, Jersey City, Hoboken, Bayonne, Paterson, Nungesser’s, For Lee, Secaucus, Union City, and Kearny. The Passaic Division served Paterson, Singac, Totowa, Haledon and Orange. And finally the Southern Division which linked the P-RSL station at Camden with an amusement park in Clementon.

The PSRy was the result of the combination of the Jersey City Hoboken & Paterson Railway, the North Jersey Street Railway, and the Orange & Passaic Valley Railway in 1903. Other lines were acquired in following years. Route abandonments began in earnest in 1925 following a strike by conductors (this coincided with the end of the “Golden Age of Traction” that had been running since 1895.) The last streetcar operations were replaced with buses in 1952.
