Transportation Company - Crystal River & San Juan - Railroad

Company History: The CR&SJ was established in 1906 to build a seven mile line from a connection with the Crystal River Railroad at Placita, Colorado to the marble quarries at Marble, Colorado. Since interchange at Placita wasn’t practical, CR&SJ ran on 4 miles of CRRR trackage rights to Redstone. In 1910, CRRR granted trackage rights to the CR&SJ all the way to the connection with the Denver & Rio Grande at Cabondale (effectively extending the CR&SJ to 28 miles.) In 1917, the marble finishing mill in Marble closed and operations on the CR&SJ were suspended.

Five years later, the mill reopened. Colorado Fuel & Iron, who owned the CRRR wasn’t interested in reopening their line just to serve as a bridge line for the CR&SJ so they leased it to them for a nominal fee. Operations on the CR&SJ continued until 1941 when the finishing mill closed again. The Crystal River & San Juan was abandoned that September.
