Transportation Company - Columbia Newbury & Laurens - Railroad

Company History: By 1891, the CN&L had built a 64 mile line from Columbia, South Carolina to Newbury and on to Dover Junction. Five years later, they acquired the Laurens Railroad which took them from Dover Junction to Laurens. CN&L attracted a number of on line customers and had a substantial interchange business with Atlantic Coast Line, Seaboard Air Line and Southern Railway. In 1924, ACL bought control of the CN&L but CN&L continued to operate independently. New diesels were delivered in ACL purple and silver but with CN&L lettering. In the late 50s, a coal fired generating station opened in Lake Murray on the CN&L which brought much coal traffic to the line. In 1984, CN&L was finally merged into Seaboard System.
Successor/Parent History:
The Seaboard System Railroad, Inc. (reporting mark SBD) was a short-lived former US Class I railroad that was created after the consolidation of the Family Lines System railroads (notably the Louisville & Nashville, Seaboard Coast Line, and Clinchfield) on December 29, 1982. Under the Family Lines era, the railroads shared common ownership but used different names when conducting business. On July 1, 1986, the Seaboard System renamed itself as the CSX Transportation and absorbed the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway on August 31, 1987 which ended the CSX Corporation's shared ownership of the Seaboard System and Chessie System railroads.
Brief History:
The U.S. is a country of 50 states covering a vast swath of North America, with Alaska in the northwest and Hawaii extending the nation’s presence into the Pacific Ocean. Major Atlantic Coast cities are New York, a global finance and culture center, and capital Washington, DC. Midwestern metropolis Chicago is known for influential architecture and on the west coast, Los Angeles' Hollywood is famed for filmmaking.
