Company History: The CL&AES opened in 1900 with a 25 mile standard gauge electric interurban line from Anderson’s Ferry on the west side of Cincinnati, Ohio west along the Ohio River to Aurora, Indiana. There was also an 8 mile branch to Harrison, Ohio. The founders hoped to some day reach Louisville but Aurora was as close as they got. Flooding on the Ohio River in 1913 put the company into receivership for the next 15 years. They finally emerged in 1928 with Railway replacing Railroad in the name. The reorganized company lasted just two years, shutting down in 1930. The newest cars were sold to Sand Springs Railway in Tulsa. Six miles of line on the east end (Anderson’s Ferry to Fernbank) were purchased by Cincinnati Street Railway and converted to to 5’ 2 ½” gauge. Service ended on that segment in 1941.
