Company History: The CBR opened in 1900 as a 28 mile standard gauge steam road built to carry passengers from Washington D.C. to a large resort at Chesapeake Beach, Maryland. The company was lead by Otto Mears had built the Rio Grande Southern and other Colorado narrow gauge lines. The line included a drawbridge over the Patuxent River. Following the First World War, road construction and the spread of the automobile began to bite into CBR’s traffic. In 1935, the railroad was abandoned and replaced with bus service. A 2-mile segment on the west end of the line was saved and became the East Washington Railway.
