Company History: The C&E was established in 1896 and built a line from Cassville, Missouri to a connection with the Frisco at Exeter, less than 5 miles away. All of their equipment was acquired secondhand including a former Frisco 2-6-0, a former MoPac 4-6-0, and a battery powered Doodlebug from the Kansas City & Memphis Railway. In 1952, C&E retired their last steam locomotive (the MP 4-6-0) and acquired a gas-electric car from the Frisco to handle most of their business. Heavier moves were handled by a secondhand Plymouth switcher. The following year, the railroad was closed by the state for lack of insurance for a period of six months. In 1954, the Frisco gas-electric was replaced with a lighter car from the Joplin & Pittsburg Railroad because the Frisco car was too hard on the track. The line was abandoned in 1956. The Plymouth switcher was sold to Kansas City Public Service Freight Operations but was determined to be too far gone to use.
