Company History: The CM&W was established in 1879 to takeover the property of the Caledonia & Mississippi Railway which was forced to reorganize before track laying had begun. The CM&W was backed in part by the Chicago Clinton Dubuque & Minnesota Railroad which connected with the CM&W at Caledonia Junction, Minnesota. CM&W built a 58 mile 3’ gauge line to Preston, Minnesota by the end of 1879. The CCD&M bought the CM&W outright in 1880 and they in turn were acquired by Milwaukee Road six months later. The line was standard gauged in 1901.
