Company History: The BRB&L opened in 1875 with a 3’ gauge line built on standard gauge length ties from the ferry terminals of East Boston, Massachusetts northeast along the coast to the resorts at Revere Beach and on to the city of Lynn. In 1891, they merged the Boston Winthrop & Shore, also a 3’ gauge line, that became a branch of the BRB&L from Orient Heights to Winthrop. Passenger business dominated and the line was powered with a fleet of Mason Bogies from Mason and other builders. Prior to the First World War, BRB&L averaged more than 19,000 passengers per day. By 1928, electrification of the line was complete. The passenger cars were converted to electric MU cars and the fleet of steam locomotives was retired. Traffic fell off precipitously with the spread of the automobile and the subsequent Great Depression. BRB&L declared bankruptcy in 1937 and was abandoned in January of 1940.
