Company History: The BHT&W was chartered in 1877 to build a line that would funnel traffic through the state owned Troy & Greenfield Railroad’s Hoosac Tunnel in northwestern Massachussetts. The Fitchburg Railroad bought the T&G including the tunnel not long atter the BHT&W was founded. BHT&W built from the end of the T&G line at the Massachssetts/Vermont border to Johnsonville, New York then turned toward Schenectady and finally Rotterdam Junction. They had planned to build east from the tunnel to Winthrop, Massachussetts. Service began in 1879. The BHT&W fought for every carload with the Troy & Boston Railroad which also used the tunnel and was parallel for much of the way. The two lines went to court over the use of abandoned right-of-ways and the right to build crossings over each other’s lines. The conflict ended in 1887 when the Fitchburg Railroad bought the Boston Hoosac Tunnel & Western and the Troy & Boston.
