Transportation Company - Stewartstown - Railroad

Company History: The STRT opened in 1885 with a seven mile line from a connection with the North-Central Railroad (later part of PRR) at New Freedom to Stewartstown, Pennsylvania. In 1923, they became the operator of the neighboring nine mile New Park & Fawn Grove Railroad from Stewartstown to Fawn Grove. That arrangement ended in 1935. In 1972, Hurricane Agnes swept through the region. Although STRT was largely untouched, Penn Central’s line that was STRT’s sole connection was severely damaged and since PC had parallel routes they could use, they didn’t plan to re-open the line. For the same reason, the route was excluded from Conrail. Ultimately, the state purchased the route and it was re-opened in 1985. STRT resumed operations, now also running the former PC line from New Freedom to a connection with the Maryland & Pennsylvania in York. That summer, they also began operating tourist trains. This arrangement lasted until 1992 when freight service ended and they stopped operating on the former PC line. Tourist trains continued to run on the original route until 2004. Tourist operations have since resumed on a limited basis and they are cautiously courting potential freight customers.
