Company History: This line first opened in 1922 to be a neutral switching carrier around the port of Charleston, South Carolina. In recent years, they ran around 12 miles of track. South Carolina Public Railways ran this and two other area railroads, the East Cooper & Berkeley and the Port Terminal Railroad of South Carolina. While the other lines had their own diesel paint schemes, the PUCC fleet seems to have only worn lettering for the parent organization. In 2013, the three lines were combined into Palmetto Railways.
Successor/Parent History: Palmetto Railways was formed in 2013 to combine three publicly owned terminal railroads in South Carolina. These were the South Carolina Pubic Railways – Port Utilities Commission of Charleston, the East Cooper & Berkeley Railroad, and the Port Terminal Railroad of South Carolina. The three are disconnected and now known as the Charleston Sub, the North Charleston Sub and the Charity Church Subdivision. They total 46 miles of line that are operated with a dozen locomotives which switch 375 cars on a typical day. The biggest customers include BP Chemical, BMW, WestRock, Kapstone, General Electric, Santee Cooper, Lansing, Frontier Logistics, Siemens, Westinghouse, Nucor Steel, and SSA Marine.
