History: For over 60 years Madill’s purpose built logging equipment has set the standard in performance, productivity and longevity for west coast logging. Railroad/Company: Sam Madill founded the business that now bears his name at Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada in 1911 while working as a blacksmith serving the local coal mining industry.

As the coal ran out, forestry expanded and the Madill family undertook repairs to logging machinery, which eventually led to the invention of the first portable spar tree yarder in 1955. The company grew, set up a state of the art plant in Nanaimo B.C. and over time manufactured and sold over 1380 spar yarders worldwide.

A complete logging product line including cable swing yarders and heel boom log loaders was designed in the 1970's through to the mid 1980's. In 1977 an additional plant was built in Kalama, Washington, U.S.A. to meet production requirements. By the 1980's the company had become known worldwide as industry leaders in forestry equipment and controlled the bulk of the worldwide 'over 200hp' cable yarder market.
