Company History: The RT was established in 1909 by the Corrigan-McKinney Steel Company (later part of Republic Steel) to deliver raw materials from docks on the Cuyahoga River to the company’s blast furnaces in Cleveland, Ohio. The RT also switched hot metal between facilities within the mill and delivered the final product to the local Class One railroads in Cleveland. In 1983, Republic became LTV Steel. RT was a common carrier and in addition to the steel business, also served the chemical industry. In 2002, the new owners International Steel Group merged the River Terminal Railway with the Cuyahoga Valley Railway to from the Cleveland Works Railway.
Successor/Parent History: The CWRO was born from the 2002 merger of the Cuyahoga Valley Railroad and the River Terminal Railroad and serves Arcelor-Mittal’s Cleveland (steel) Works. The line receives scrap, coke and some slab steel and ships slabs and coils. They also serve a Sunoco refinery. The nickname for the line is “The Crow,” a corruption of their reporting marks. The CWRO has around 35 EMD switchers, mostly SW1001’s and SW1500’s on their roster.
