Transportation Company - Rayonier - Railroad

Company History: Rayonier Company was born in 1937 when Rainier Pulp & Paper went public and changed their name. The spelling change was a nod to the company’s project with Du Pont to turn pulp from hemlock trees into Rayon. The company had long had a presence on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula and as the Second World War was drawing to a close, they began acquiring other properties in the area including Ozette Timber Company and tracts from Bloedel-Donovan, both of whom also had significant logging railroads. The railroad included two separate lines, the Clallam Branch and the Grays Harbor Line, both on the peninsula. In the steam era, geared and rod engines were both used. The first diesels arrived from Baldwin in 1956. Use of the railroad was discontinued in 1971.
