Company History: PTCo was established in 1946 when the Portland Transit Company purchased the streetcar and interurban lines of the Portland Electric Power Company. The railroad was split into two companies. The streetcar line in East Portland became the Portland Traction Company. The interurban/freight line that ran south to Oregon City and southeast to Boring with a branch to Gresham became the Portland Railroad & Terminal Division of Portland Traction Company (a separate company from Portland Traction Company.)
With streetcar operations in East Portland already in a downward spiral, PTCo was not expected to last long. Despite that, when several former Pacific Electric Hollywood cars became available, PTCo snapped them up. Streetcar service ended in 1956 when the last remaining routes were turned over to PTCo bus line subsidiary Rose City Transit.
