Company History: SOPOR, which opened for service in 1978, serves industries around the port of Baie-Comeau, Quebec including Alcoa, Resolute Forest Products and Aluminerie Alouette Aluminum. The port is on the north bank of the Saint Lawrence River about 260 miles northeast of Quebec City. This area is isolated from the North American rail network. Interchange with Canadian National is made via the car ferry Georges Alexandre Lebel to Metane on the other side of the river (the Saint Lawrence is about 38 miles wide at this point.) The ferry makes one round trip per day.
Brief History: Canada is a North American country stretching from the U.S. in the south to the Arctic Circle in the north. Major cities include massive Toronto, west coast film centre Vancouver, French-speaking Montréal and Québec City, and capital city Ottawa. Canada's vast swaths of wilderness include lake-filled Banff National Park in the Rocky Mountains. It's also home to Niagara Falls, a famous group of massive waterfalls.
