Company History: The MAW was established after the 1997 collapse of Indiana Hi-Rail to resume operation on the former Wabash line between Woodburn, Indiana and Liberty Center, Ohio. The line became infamous for having some of the worst track still in use in the nation. The route cuts across the Great Black Swamp. This and the fact that no major work has been done to the track since it was a Wabash mainline in 1964 accounts for the track conditions (Wabash successor N&W downgraded the line in favor of a parallel Nickel Plate route.) The MAW was a sister road of the Connersville & New Castle. The line was sold in late 2012 to the Pioneer Railcorp family of shortlines who renamed it Napolean Defiance & Western.
