Company History: The M&LS was established in 1909 to built 35 miles of line from connections with the Duluth South Shore & Atlantic in Doty and the Lake Superior & Ishpeming near Munising to the lake port of Manistique on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. This is a prolific timber producing region. The Ann Arbor Railroad ran car ferries from their terminal in Elberta (on the Lower Peninsula) to the M&LS in Manistique. In fact, the M&LS was controlled by the AA for most of its history. Somewhere along the line, the M&LS picked up the nickname, The Haywire. Eventually, the timber business waned. In 1968 the last car ferry departed for Elberta and the M&LS was abandoned.
