Company History: This operation in Tallulah, Louisiana began in 1928 when CM&LCo (which had been founded a century before) bought a mill complex and adjoining forest land from the Krus Brothers. The facility included a sawmill and box factory. Rail operations were standard gauge using 2-truck Heislers. The Second World War brought additional timber lands purchased from Singer (the sewing machine people) and a swelled workforce – 505 German prisoners of war captured in North Africa. With most of the quality timber cut over, the railroad operations ended sometime between August of 1962 and 1966. One of the Heislers was donated to a railroad museum in Pennsylvania. The box factory and veneer mill closed in 1970 while the sawmill remained open.
Brief History: The U.S. is a country of 50 states covering a vast swath of North America, with Alaska in the northwest and Hawaii extending the nation’s presence into the Pacific Ocean. Major Atlantic Coast cities are New York, a global finance and culture center, and capital Washington, DC. Midwestern metropolis Chicago is known for influential architecture and on the west coast, Los Angeles' Hollywood is famed for filmmaking.
