Company History: In 1986, LTV Steel Mining Company took over the Erie Mining Company operation that mined, processed and transported iron ore from a large deposit in Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota. Production had peaked in the 1970s so LTV knew it was buying an operation that was coming in for a landing. The Erie Mining maroon and yellow paint on locomotives persisted with some having their lettering patched for the new owners. In 2000, LTV announced it was closing the operation due to a combination of obsolete processing equipment and the declining quality of the ore in the deposit.
