Company History:
The L&BR opened in 1906 with a 10 mile line between Lowville and Croghan, New York. Traffic was light but consistent over the years. In the diesel era, L&BR was partial to GE 44-tonners. In the 1980s, Boise Cascade took control of the railroad (they had a plant served by the line.) The 44-tonners were repainted into a green and white Boise Cascade paint scheme with “Lowville and Beaver River” on the side of the cab. Tourist trains were also run during this period. In 1990, traffic dropped to nothing and the railroad was closed. More than a year later, Genesee Valley Transportation, a local shortline group, took ownership of the L&BR and began running trains once again. In 2007, traffic again lapsed. The line has been idle since then. Modeling the L&BR was the subject of a series in Railroad Model Craftsman magazine beginning in their October, 1991 issue.
