Transportation Company - Great Walton - Railroad

Company History: The GRWR opened in March of 1987 to take over operation of the 10 mile line between Monroe and Social Circle, Georgia from Georgia Eastern, who had bought the line from Seaboard System and held it for less than eight weeks. The route had been part of the Georgia Railroad. Traffic includes clay, feldspar, fertilizer, grain, machinery, plastics, pulpwood, silica and woodchips. Between 1989 and 2008, GRWR leased a 25 mile line between Covington and Shady Dale, Georgia from Norfolk Southern but that operation was turned over to Squaw Creek Southern. In 2001, GRWR became the designated operator of the 38 mile Athens Line between Madison and Junior State, Georgia (formerly a Central of Georgia route.) Today they also operate the Hartwell Railroad although Hartwell maintains its own identity.
