History: In 1938, Brazil bought three submersibles to replace those of the earlier type F, They were considered 'coastal' submarines due to their limited range and seaworthiness. The three subs were the Tupi, Timbira and Tamoio. They were part of the Italian Adua class. They were formerly known as the Ascianti, Gondar and Neghelli. They were purchased to achieve submarine parity with Argentina and its three Santa Fe class submarines (which were also part of the Adua class). Their coastal nature did not prevent them from operating in the Mediterranean. They were sent to France in 1945 and remained in service until they were stricken in 1959 and scrapped in 1960.
