Company History: The DCLR operated two segments of the former Pennsylvania Railroad in Delaware. One line ran from Georgetown to Lewes and the other from Ellendale to Milton. The company was launched in 1982 as the designated operator of these lines which had been left to the state by the previous owner Conrail. When the operating contract came up for renewal in 1994, DCLR lost out to the Maryland & Delaware Railroad who took over operations. Five years later, Maryland & Delaware refused to renew the contract and Delaware Coast Line returned as operator. DCLR’s diesel fleet has included one each of RS-36, T-6, RS-1, RS-18, GE 44-tonner and a pair of GE B-23-7’s. In 2017, a swing bridge on the Georgetown-Lewes line was condemned. A trio of stranded tank cars had to be trucked from the SPI Pharma spur in Lewes around the closure. They were rerailed on the other side and a final train delivered them back to Georgetown. Meanwhile, the final DCLR train ran on the Milton line in late December, 2018.
