Company History: The CHR opened in 1900 between Palmerton and Little Gap, Pennsylvania, a distance of just 7 miles. It was called “the millionaires road” because the entire board of directors was made up of millionaires led by JP Morgan. That party lasted just one year before New Jersey Zinc took control of the line and has owned it ever since. Service has ended on all but a short segment in Palmerton that serves a large NJ Zinc facility.
Successor/Parent History: The Horsehead Holding Corporation, formerly The New Jersey Zinc Company, was an American producer of zinc and related materials based in Pittsburgh. The operations of the historic company are currently conducted as American Zinc Recycling.
Brief History: The U.S. is a country of 50 states covering a vast swath of North America, with Alaska in the northwest and Hawaii extending the nation’s presence into the Pacific Ocean. Major Atlantic Coast cities are New York, a global finance and culture center, and capital Washington, DC. Midwestern metropolis Chicago is known for influential architecture and on the west coast, Los Angeles' Hollywood is famed for filmmaking.
