Company History: This line opened in 2005, replacing the Eastern Shore Railroad as operator of the county owned line on the Delmarva Peninsula from Pokomoke City, Maryland to their car float dock at Charles City, Virginia (64 miles.) The two car floats (one with 25 car capacity and one with 15) carried the trains across Chesapeake Bay to a Norfolk area dock, specifically at Little Creek, Virginia. The line was part of the PRR. Bay Coast interchanged with Norfolk Southern at both ends. The car float operation was one of two left in the United States at the time and this one had been in continuous operation since 1885. In 2018, traffic fell off considerably when their largest customer closed. Bay Coast Railroad shut down in May of 2018. Delmarva Central took over handling a few customers on the north end and Buckingham Branch Railroad took over the small amount of business on the Virginia side.
Brief History: The U.S. is a country of 50 states covering a vast swath of North America, with Alaska in the northwest and Hawaii extending the nation’s presence into the Pacific Ocean. Major Atlantic Coast cities are New York, a global finance and culture center, and capital Washington, DC. Midwestern metropolis Chicago is known for influential architecture and on the west coast, Los Angeles' Hollywood is famed for filmmaking.
