Company History: This 60 mile line, part of the Pioneer Railcorp family of shortlines, ran from connections with CSX in Flomaton, Alabama north to Corduroy. It began in 1991 as a spin off of CSX. This line was originally the middle third of Louisville & Nashville's mainline between Selma, Alabama and Pensacola, Florida. Since Selma is just an hour's drive west of Montgomery and CSX already had lines running from Selma to Montgomery to Flomaton to Pensacola, they abandoned the north end of this line and spun off the rest. ALAB had just three customers which were served two days per week: Temple Inland (particle board and veneer), Gate Precast (cement), and Harrigan Lumber (lumber.) A 2016 line inspection showed several bridges on the line incapable of handling loaded cars and all freight service was embargoed. The ALAB became a car storage operation. In 2019 Pioneer Railcorp applied to abandon the entire railroad but in 2020 the newly formed Alabama Railroad LLC purchased the line instead. Pandemic related shutdowns doomed this line and the new owners applied to abandon it in July of 2022.
