Company History: In February 1928, Fruit Growers Express (FGE) formed the National Car Company as a subsidiary to service the meat transportation market. Customers included Kahns, Oscar Mayer, and Rath.
The FGE itself had been a subsidary of Armour Car lines, but in 1919 the Federal Trade Commission had ordered Armour Car lines to sell their produce hauling subsidiary for anti-trust reasons. Thus the FGE was formed in March, 1920 using 4,280 reefers acquired from Armour & Co.
