Company History: The EMCO rail operation opened in 1957 transport iron ore from a large deposit in Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota. The company was jointly owned by Bethlehem Steel, Youngstown Sheet & Tube, Interlake Iron, and Stelco. Production peaked in 1973 with 11.5 million tons. That’s the equivalent of 442 loaded 70 ton ore cars every day for the year.
Here is the EMCO diesel fleet: F9A: 6; F9B: 6; RS11: 15; S-12: 9 (number 403 was the last Baldwin diesel built.); C424: 1; C420: 3; GP38: 2; GP20: 3.
LTV Steel took over the operation in 1986 and re-christened it LTV Steel Mining Company.
