Company History: P&PU was established in 1880 to be a neutral terminal railroad for Peoria, Illinois. Though not as busy an interchange point as Chicago or St. Louis, Peoria does lay on the border between railroads of the East and railroads of the West. P&PU also provided a bridge over the Illinois River. P&PU had 130 miles of track, just 12 of which would be considered the mainline. In 1985, they took over operation of a short segment of Rock Island line that ran in the city. In 2004, the P&PU was leased to the Genesee & Wyoming shortline group who established the Tazewell & Peoria Railroad to operate it.
