Company History:
The GRN first appeared in 1920 with the renaming of the Greenville & Knoxville Railroad which ran 20 miles between Greenville and River Falls, South Carolina. Around 1955, the River Falls end was cut back to Travellers Rest, South Carolina,10 miles from Greenville. In 1957, they joined the Pinsley group of shortlines. Traffic included cotton waste, chemicals, lumber, paper, peat moss, scrap and vermiculite. By the mid-90s, traffic had fallen off considerably, averaging less than 3 cars per day. Pinsley sold the GRN to the RailTex shortline group who placed it under the control of their Carolina Piedmont Railroad subsidiary. The GRN closed the following year and was officially abandoned in 2005.
