Company History: The CA&SRwy was formed in 1914 when Southern Iowa Traction (ironically a steam powered line) was acquired by the Centerville Light & Traction Company, a streetcar line in Centerville. CL&TCo renamed the SIT Centerville Albia & Southern. The line ran from Centerville to Albia, Iowa. The new owners electrified the line immediately but freight service continued to be provided behind steam power until the following year when new box motors were delivered. In 1916, both Centerville Albia & Southern and Centerville Light & Traction were acquired by Iowa Southern Utilities. Streetcar operations in Centerville ended in 1925 and passenger service on the CA&SRwy ended in 1933. The CA&SRwy was reorganized in 1941 as the Iowa Southern Railway.
Successor/Parent History:
Iowa Southern Railway is part of the Progressive Rail family of shortlines.
