Company History: The D&R opened in 1883 serving a 5 mile line between its namesake towns in Arkansas. The line was built to serve a cotton growing region but their focus shifted to coal in 1900 when large semi-anthracite deposits were discovered on the line. By the mid-50s, the coal played out and the focus shifted again to timber products with petroleum and plastics added to the mix in recent decades. The D&R is owned by Arkansas Shortline Railroads.
