Transportation Company - Aurora Elgin & Fox River - Railroad

Company History: This line appeared in 1923 from the breakup and reorganization of another interurban line in the suburbs west of Chicago. The line ran from Yorkville north to Carpentersville via Aurora and Elgin, Illinois. A tornado wrecked the line between Dundee and Carpentersville in 1933 and that portion was immediately abandoned. Passenger service ended on the AE&FRE in 1935 but freight service continued under trolley wire on a 3 mile portion of the line to serve the Elgin State Hospital until 1947. At that point, they dieselized. With the end of freight service in 1972, the remaining track was sold to the Fox River Trolley Museum. Rail freight service to hospitals was more common than you might think. Many required coal to feed boilers for heating and electricity. LCL service for foodstuffs, linens, and other supplies was pretty common as well.
