Company History: Just because you have a name like a Saturday morning show on Nickelodeon doesn't mean you aren't a serious railroad. Yolo Shortline was the result of a 1991 spinoff from Union Pacific. They operated two branches of the former Sacramento Northern, the Woodland Branch (16 miles) and Clarksburg Branch (11 miles.) Both originate in West Sacramento, California. Freight was their bread and butter but they did dabble with some tourist trains. "Yolo" comes from Yolo County in which the line operated. In 2003, Yolo Shortline merged with the Sierra Railroad, despite the fact that they didn't actually connect with each other, to form the Sierra Northern.
Successor/Parent History: In 2003, the Sierra Railway and Yolo Short Line Railway merged to form the Sierra Northern. They continue to use the SERA reporting marks originally adopted by Sierra Railway. They run three disconnected lines in northern California: Oakdale to Standard, Fort Bragg to Willits and Woodland to West Sacramento. The Sacramento River Train dinner train operates on the latter.
