Company History: The Pennsylvania Salt Manufacturing Company operated multiple salt mines in Natrona Pennsylvania (Allegheny County). Natrona in fact, was a company town created to service the mines. The Natrona facility was built to process aluminum ore shipped in from their cryolite deposits in Greenland. The Natrona plant mined the salt from the salt wells in Natrona, pulverized it, sifted and heated it along with the cryolite ore to create sodium aluminate. The company also operated bituminous coal mines in Natrona.
